The photographs below and on the other two Soapstone pages represent several of my owls currently for sale. Many of my owls are freestanding. Those on bases are pinned and epoxy glued to the base for added durability. I should have all of the owls not marked "SOLD," but once in a while, I forget to mark one. Watch this site for periodic updates. And remember, these are all one-of-a-kind, so don't expect, look for, or want to order a duplicate. The NEW label next to an owl reflects the fact that the owl is new in 2011. I recently discovered that a gremlin has been deleting some of my owls without my knowledge. (Ha! Ha!) After a thorough inventory, I am quite sure all the owls I have for sale are on this site, including some rather old ones. LAYAWAYS are possible. E-mail me for terms.

NOTE: If you have any large pieces, 20 pounds or more, of Montana dendritic soapstone, I will pay top price.

IN THE MOMENT

This is my impression of a frog unexpectedly encountering a young Saw Whet owl. Both are captured "in the moment," and neither knows what will happen next, nor does the viewer. In twenty-five years of soapstone carving, this was the first frog I have carved, and it seemed appropriate since Saw Whets are known to eat frogs.

Both owl and frog came from the same piece of Montana soapstone and have the dendritic pattern as well as swirls of manganese mixing with a varying base color.

The owl, itself, is approximately 7.5" high, 7 " wide, and 5.5" deep. The frog is 4.25" high, 4" wide, and 2.5" deep. They sit on a dark-stained oak base that is 2.75" high and 11" square. An acrylic base that is 2.5" thick and 9.5" square is also available. As the larger photos show, the pieces are fully carved.

This is a rather strange piece of dendritic soapstone in that aren't any pronounced dendrites showing. Evidently, based on its coloration, it does have some iron mixed in. It is a mish-mash with both coarse and smooth surfaces.

As the larger photos show, this owl is minimally carved all the way around The piece stands 4.5" high, .75 wide and 3.25" deep. It is mounted on a dark-stained cherry base that 3" x 2" x 1".

The owl is absolutely stunning. Every time I unwrap one of your owls I get the same feeling I have since buying my first one from you. The detail and beauty just makes me so appreciative of your talent that allows me to enjoy my love of the best raptor of all. Now, before I get too maudlin and it goes to your head, I'll just say thank you for my latest owl, dear Clarence, and for being my Owlman.

The pose of this owl intrigued me, and I hope you like the way it came out with a rather strange-shaped wing on the side facing you. There are nice dendrites along with swirls and streaks of the manganese, and a little bit of iron mixed in.

The owl is 2.5" high, 2.5" wide, and 2.75" deep, and is carved all the way around. It is mounted on a cherry-stained oak base.

The Chinese call this panda stone and the reason is obvious. It comes from China and is, more or less, black and white. The stone is much harder than the dendritic so that is the reason for its angularity. There are three little white indentations on the back and I chose to leave them. Removal would have removed quite a bit of stone.

The owl is about 4.5" high and 3 "wide and 1 " deep. It sits on a dark-stained cherry base that is about 3" square x 2" high.

From a very nice piece of Montana  dendritic soapstone, this owl barely found a place to roost. The sculpture sort of "overflows" the base, as the larger photos illustrate. The owl remains a bit mystical with that large wing over one eye. He has a rather quizzical look but, at the same time, a "don't mess with me" attitude. Nice dendrites and subtle coloring make him a charmer. He is 3" high, 3.5" wide and 2.75" deep.

The base is oak and 3" square and 2" high. He definitely has attitude and is carved all the way around.

Every once in a while I end up with a weird owl. This one can't get much lower to the ground. Did you ever put your ear on a railroad track to listen for a train? Maybe this bird is listening for a mouse. Carved from Montana dendritic soapstone, he has very interesting coloration with the manganese in dendrites and swirls. A splotch of iron, here and there, adds even more interest. The back is polished smooth, and the owl is 4" wide, 1.75" deep, and 2" high.

I am not certain what this owl is trying to say with its strange posture. It did choose to express itself, and all I did was reveal it in the stone. The manganese spread out on this piece rather than forming the distinctive dendrites. The owl is 4" high and is carved all around, but without a lot of detail. It is mounted on a 2.5" square x 1.25" dark-stained mahogany base.

A piece of dendritic soapstone that is, as the ladies call it, "mauve." I only see pink, but it is a more subtle shade than the photos show. Geologists have told me that this "pink" is also caused by the manganese that forms the dendrites. There are, however, some pronounced dendrites here and there on the piece. The largest piece of this color was my 1995 Birds in Art owl, Impression on a Winter's Eve. The owl is 2" high, 2.25" wide and 1" deep.
